Dear Little Book Worm,

Your interest in books brings such joy to me. They open up worlds to you that would not otherwise be possible. So many things to see, places to visit, and concepts to learn. One day soon you will discover the greatest book of all – the Bible. It, too, will open up a whole new world to learn about. But even better than that, it will help you get to know the One who loved you enough to make sure you came to be. Read on, Little One, and discover the wonders all around you!

As Always,

Someone Who Loves You

2 Timothy 3:15-16 … from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Do you hear God speaking to you in these letters? If so, it’s no coincidence.  As I write to my new granddaughter, I can hear God speaking to me. And my prayer is that you can also hear Him speaking to you for He loves us even more than I love my granddaughter.

Dear Frustrated One, (From Someone Who Loves You series)

Dear Frustrated One,

Why do you keep pushing me away when it’s my hand that holds what you want?  I can see how hungry you are. I know what you want and I want to give it to you. But you are the one stopping me. All that hitting and flailing out prevents me from doing what we both want.  I can keep battling your efforts to do it yourself but it would be so much easier if you would just relax and let me do for you what you can’t yet do for yourself. Oh, and those screams are not helping. Be still, Little One, and know I am here, ready to feed you as soon as you let me.

Always,

Someone who loves you

For He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.  Ps 107:9

These letters have double meaning. On the surface they are letters I’m writing to my granddaughter. But they are also letters God is writing to you. Reread them, replacing the greeting with your own name, and the closure with God’s name – and get to know the great love God has for you!

Dear Grumpy Face, (from Someone Who Loves You series)

Dear Grumpy Face,

Are you feeling a little bit confined? I know restraints aren’t fun and be quite frustrating.  In a perfect world, I would take you out and let you have the freedom you want. But there is real danger in this world and those boundaries are there to keep you safe. My heart hurts to see you so unhappy but your safety is more important at this moment than your happiness. Hang in there, Little One, this moment won’t last forever.

Always,

Someone who loves you

When You Pull Me Closer, I Come to Life

The words from one of TobyMac’s songs floated through her mind… “When you pull me closer, I come to life…”

“That is so true,” she thought.  “Spiritually, I’m easily lulled to sleep. But when God calls me, my spirit jumps and I do come alive.” Even though she could sometimes get into His presence through her own efforts, she knew ultimately she was totally dependent on God. Especially when she was as tired as she was now.

Later that day, as she gazed at her newborn granddaughter sleeping in her nursery bed, those words returned.  Turning to look at her daughter sitting in the chair next to her, she said, “It’s just like Ryn.”

“What is?” her daughter answered distractedly.

“That song… ‘when you pull me closer, I come to life’… that we heard earlier today. It’s just like Ryn. She lays sleeping in her bed but when you call her, she wakes up. And she’s totally dependent on you going to her because she can’t come to you. It’s the same with God. We are totally dependent on Him to come to us because we aren’t capable of going to Him. And when He calls us, we wake up. We come alive.”

“Yeah, OK,” mumbled her daughter, obviously impressed with her insight.

But that didn’t bother her. She had already turned back to the sleeping infant, enjoying her smallest moves and sounds – while God lovingly enjoyed all three of them.

Being Born

13901

OK, what just happened here?

You got born.

Why?

Because being born was healthier for you than not being born.

Why?

Because your environment was becoming unstable and would have eventually hurt you. Being born took you out of that environment into a safer one.

Why?

Because now there are lots of people around you, loving you and taking care of you.

Why?

Because you’re not capable of taking care of yourself right now.

Why?

Because you are new to this life.

Why?

Because you were just born.

Did you think I was writing the above conversation with Baby AJ in mind? If so, you were right. And wrong. I was also talking about a brand new baby Christian. And we are the staff that is responsible for caring for them; welcoming them into their new life, and making sure they are fed and loved.

Are we doing as good a job with the new Christians God places in our lives as the hospital staff is doing with AJ and the other newborns?

Now that’s a good question.
